The Nakasendo is an ancient road dating back hundreds of years that once connected Kyoto and Tokyo. Most of the path has been completely lost to modernization, but here in the Kiso Valley, it remains almost exactly as it was. Hike in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of samurai come before. And enjoy the sights of rural Japan just as they were hundreds of years ago.

Probably the second most popular hike on the Nakasendo, the Torii Pass was named after a torii gate located near the top of the pass. The gate was constructed under the order of Kiso Yoshimoto (1475-1504), who prayed there before he did battle. He subsequently won and built the gate in thanks for the good omens. This section of the Nakasendo was once renowned for being the most treacherous and difficult. But don’t fear, these days, at 7km, it is one of the easier hikes. It finishes in Narai Juku, a historical post town nicknamed “Narai of a thousand inns”. It is 1km in length and absolutely stunning with many of the inns and restaurants from the Edo period still in business today.

The tour starts at Yabuhara Station in the sleepy little town of Yabuhara. If this isn’t convenient for you we can customize the plan to fit your needs. After walking through the historical town and learning about the local crafts, the hike heads up into the mountains of the Torii Pass. Expect a beautiful winding forest road often pathed with ancient cobblestones, known in Japanese as ishidatami, and fantastic views of the valley below. Near the top of the pass, we will stop to enjoy the views, have some hot drinks, and possibly even a bento lunch box. Having reached the top of the Torii Pass (1,197m), we will start to descend and make our way to the incredible post town of Narai.

After enjoying exploring Narai and its many wonders, the hike can easily be extended by an extra 2km and go to Hirasawa, a village of craftsmen, which produces almost all of Japan’s lacquerware. We can head into the shops of local lacquerware craftsmen to learn about the craft, under no pressure or obligation to buy.

The tour ends either at Narai Station or Hirasawa Station, whichever is most convenient for you. Or you could choose to stay in Narai Juku in one of the ancient inns (highly recommended). Please contact us for help and free booking.
