The Nakasendo is an ancient road dating back hundreds of years that once connected Kyoto and Tokyo. Most of the path has been completely lost to modernization, but here, deep in the heart of central Japan, a lot of it remains almost exactly as it was. Hike in the footsteps of hundreds of thousands, if not millions of samurai come before. And enjoy the sights of rural Japan just as they were hundreds of years ago.

This hike of the Nakasendo is well off of the beaten track. It is so remote in fact that it can only really be hiked over two days because there is no public transportation for miles around. The hike takes place in Gifu Prefecture, and it’s significant because it’s the point where the Nakasendo leaves the flat plains and enters into the mountains of central Japan. One of the best things about this hike is the condition that the Nakasendo has been left in. In most areas of Japan, the ancient roads and their relics have mainly been destroyed, but this trail is so remote that you’ll see endless amounts of ancient relics, from holy statues to ancient Japanese milestone markers.

Starting at Mitake Station (if this meeting point isn’t convenient for you we can customize the plan to fit your needs), the first day travels 12km to Hosokute along quiet country roads and forested mountain trails. In Hosokute there is only one inn, and pretty much no other stores. This inn has been in business for centuries and has always stayed in the Sakai family who still run it to this day. This is a highlight and the recommended stay should they have availability. Be aware that this trip is being sold as two individual day trips, without the fee for accommodation included. When you contact us to book, we offer a free booking support service to make sure everything works smoothly, but just be aware that the cost of accommodation is not included.

On the second day trip, you will leave Hosokute and carry on the journey. You will walk 19km in total on the second day, passing over the incredible Biwa Pass with its original cobblestones left over from the Edo period (1603-1867) and through the historical village of Okute. From there you’ll head deeper into the mountains of the Juusan Pass seeing endless relics as you go. Eventually, you’ll come to the small city of Ena. Ena is formerly known as Oi. With a train station and all the conveniences of the city, the second day ends here. Feel free to book another day hike afterward to continue your adventure.

During these day trips, I will provide hot drinks, and snacks for you, and you can even try on my own handmade waraji (traditional Japanese straw sandals), which I specialize in making.
