 Getting To Hakone

From Tokyo By Train:

  1. The Bullet Train:

    • Tokyo Station to Hakone Yumoto Station in about 1 hour.

    • Route: Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo Station to Odawara. Change there and catch the Tozan Railway Line to Hakone Yumoto Station.

    • Price: 4,130 JPY one way or only 320 JPY with the JR Pass.

    • Verdict: The fastest way to get to Hakone from Tokyo. Definitely the way to go if you have the JR Pass. Expensive but convenient if you don’t.

  2. First Class Train (Romance Car)

    • Shinjuku Station to Hakone Yumoto Station taking about 85-100 minutes.

    • Route: Direct train on the Odakyu Line Romance Car to Hakone Yumoto.

    • Price: 2,330 JPY one way. JR Pass not valid for this line.

    • Verdict: The easiest and most comfortable way to get to Hakone by train. You won’t have to make any transfers. You will need a seat reservation ticket to ride this train which is available either at the Odakyu Service Counter or at ticket machines on the platform itself. Be sure to leave enough time to do this or buy the tickets prior to your travel.

  3. Standard Trains:

    1. Shinjuku Station to Hakone Yumoto Station:

      • 110-120 minutes.

      • Route: Rapid Express (Orange color coded) on the Odakyu Line to Odawara Station. Change at Odawara to the Tozan Railway Line to Hakone Yumoto Station.

      • Price: 1,220 JPY one way. JR Pass not valid on this line.

      • Verdict: Good for those on a budget but these are commuter trains so they can get crowded especially at peak times.

    2. Tokyo Station to Hakone Yumoto Station:

      • 100-110 minutes.

      • Route: Catch the JR Tokaido Line train for Atami from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station. Change at Odawara to the Tozan Railway Line to Hakone Yumoto Station.

      • Price: 1,840 JPY or 320 JPY with the JR Pass.

      • Verdict: Good for budget travelers staying near Tokyo Station.

From Tokyo By Bus:

  • From Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal to Hakone Togendai (Lake Ashi) in 2 hours and 30 minutes.

  • Route: Direct Bus on the Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus traveling on the express way stopping in Gotemba Premium Outlets on the way.

  • Price: 2,040 JPY one way. JR Pass not valid for this bus.

  • Verdict: This is probably the easiest way to go if you are staying in the Sengokuhara area but not necessarily the fastest. Please work out the bus terminals location and get your tickets with plenty of time to spare. It can be tougher to work out than trains.

From Other Locations:

  1. Haneda Airport to Hakone - The same bus company as above runs two buses a day to Hakone.

  2. All other locations: Odawara is your hub city with a Shinkansen bullet train stop. If using a JR Pass, catch a JR train to Odawara Station and then transfer to the Tozan Railway Line from Odawara to Hakone Yumoto Station costing 320 JPY and taking 15 minutes.

  3. If flying to Tokyo and traveling direct to Hakone, Haneda Airport is the better located of the two Tokyo Airports.

  4. Best of luck! See you soon.
